RESEARCH INTO A CULTURAL APEX AND THE VOICE

Video
2016-2017

The project reflects on opera's place in contemporary life, juxtaposing it with earlier themes of elemental human accomplishments such as making fire or textiles. It explores the challenges of mastering an art form that is both revered and distant from everyday experience. Through this lens, the artist examines the interplay of mastery and novicehood, and the ways in which opera, while a symbol of cultural advancement, contrasts with more immediate or primal human endeavors.

The work also addresses themes of failure, mortality, and the passage of time. The artist's struggle to master opera, with its demanding techniques and fleeting expression, serves as a meditation on the limitations of time and the relentless pursuit of excellence, reflecting the broader human quest for meaning within our finite existence.
